After I got my Piccolo series81x N150 I wanted to install a fresh copy of Windows from USB using Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool, mainly because there were a few things that weren’t working correctly with the shipped copy of Windows, but also to avoid any possible hidden software/malware. It took a bit of trial and error, but finally I got everything running. This is how you do it with minimal headaches:

1. Download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

2. Create installation media on a USB drive

3. Download the N150 drivers from this link that X-Plus provided me: https://mega.nz/folder/hmxXxJaZ#I2lH272R4CtXagmJN37qWg

4. Unzip the drivers, and place the folders containing the drivers on a separate USB drive

5. There are a few drivers missing (or they are out-of-date) in the driver pack, so you’ll need to download those separately from the Microsoft Update Catalog:

  • Fingerprint reader “FocalTech Electronics”, hardware ID “ACPI\FTE3600”. Get the latest available for Windows 11 here.
  • Intel Integrated Sensor Solution, hardware ID “PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_54FC”. Get the latest available for Windows 11 here.
  • Intel Serial IO SPI Host Controller – 54FB, hardware ID “PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_54FB”. Get the latest available for Windows 11 here.

Open the downloaded CAB files, copy the containing files and paste them in the separate USB drive alongside the drivers from the driver pack.

6. Insert both USB drives in the Piccolo and turn it on. Due to the default boot order, it should automatically boot from the Windows 11 install USB. Follow the installation instructions as usual, but on every reboot, press FN+F7 when the X-Plus logo comes up to change boot device – select “Windows Boot Manager”. Or you can change the boot order in the BIOS if you want to avoid having to do this on each reboot during the install. At one point early on during the install, it will ask you to provide drivers for your network card. Select the USB drive containing the drivers, and the installer will search through it and install all missing drivers, not only the missing Wi-Fi driver. Once all the drivers are installed it will either let you select a wireless network or prompt you to reboot again. From here, the installation should continue as normal.

7. From what I can tell, the FocalTech Electronics fingerprint reader is not compatible with Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security, so to get it to work you need to disable that under Settings –> Accounts –> Sign-in Options by turning on the “Sign in with external camera or fingerprint reader”. Once you’ve done that and restarted the computer, you should be able to register a fingerprint.

Good luck!
